Low Carb Thanksgiving Sides: Healthy Alternatives for Holiday Favorites

At Thanksgiving, we tend to eat our carbs with a side of even more carbs: buttered rolls, mashed potatoes, and stuffing all topped with gravy. If you’re watching your carbohydrate intake, you’ll want to re-evaluate what constitutes a “staple” of the Thanksgiving spread. These ideas […]

A Keto Thanksgiving: Our Favorite Recipes Roundup

A Keto Thanksgiving: Our Favorite Recipes Roundup

Thanksgiving is all about gathering with family, celebrating the harvest… and eating a notoriously carb-heavy meal. What’s a ketogenic eater to do on one of the most food-centric holidays of all?

Get creative in the kitchen, of course!

The turkey is already carb-free, so we’ve compiled some of our favorite low- and no-carb recipes, packed with nourishing fats and filling proteins, to help you round out the perfect keto Thanksgiving table.

Whether you’re hosting or you’re attending a family meal, here’s what to make to ensure you can celebrate in keto-compliant fashion (and perhaps introduce that resistant uncle to just how delicious mashed cauliflower can be).

Appetizers

Cheesy Spinach Puffs

You – and your guests – will be shocked these are grain-free. A Sweet Life’s Cheesy Spinach Puffs are packed with spinach, butter, parmesan and almond flour and make for a luscious start to a holiday meal.

Buffaflower Bites

Even the most skeptical of family members will be on board with these convincing buffalo wing substitutes. Butter is Not a Carb combined buffalo sauce with cauliflower, cheese and almond flour to make a totally satisfying recreationof your favorite appetizer. Take it a step further by serving with a side of blue cheese dip.

Roasted Garlic and Bacon Spinach Dip

The perfect answer to the pile of crudite that will inevitably show up in the kitchen, Sally’s Baking Addiction has concocted this creamy, savory, truly indulgent dip. You can pretend this is healthy by focusing on the spinach, or you can admit how intensely delicious it is and just dig in. In place of chips, use sliced low-carb veggies like cucumber, or prepared cracker alternatives like kale chips or pork rinds.

Bacon Wrapped Meatballs

Classic passable hors d’oeuvres, check out these simple but delicious meat-on-meatballs from Swerve Sweet.

Sides

Paleo Almond Flour Biscuits

The perfect keto-compliant bread substitute can be hard to find (and even more complicated to make). Wholesum Yum’s Paleo almond flour biscuits make the perfect side to any Thanksgiving meal; plus, they’re delicious with gravy (see below).

Paleo Stuffing

Stuffing without bread? You bet. This version from ZenBelly is made entirely without grains. Instead, the base is made from ground pork, diced veggies and egg for a filling, protein-filled stuffing alternative. Break out all those spices you never use and throw together this version that is a dead-ringer for the version you remember from your pre-keto days. Stuff it in a turkey or bake on its own.

Grain-free Gravy

It’s not Thanksgiving without a rich gravy; sadly, most of them contain wheat- or corn-based flour for thickening. Ruled.Me has you covered with this 10-minute keto gravy. The best part? It’s made with breakfast sausage renderings, so you can start your gravy first thing on Thanksgiving morning.

Mashed Cauliflower, two ways

Even if you’re not having potatoes, you can enjoy the creamy, fluffy experience of this mashed classic using cauliflower instead. Low Carb Maven shares the basic and the loaded version of this favorite, which you can tailor to your family’s taste or to the other items on your menu.

Buttered Brussels Sprouts with Nuts

Sure, veggies are pretty easy to fit into a keto plan, but these ones from the Keto Diet App have a special holiday flair. Also, they’re covered in butter and are extra delicious. Check out the recipe for some of their creative topping ideas, like whipping cream and porcini mushrooms.

Dessert

Pumpkin Pie Pudding

Everyone knows the filling is the best part of eating pie, so why not ditch the crust from the beginning and serve this keto-friendly pumpkin pie pudding from I Breathe, I’m Hungry instead? It has a coconut milk base and tons of warming spices.

Chocolate Chip Cheesecake Bars

These are every bit as sumptuous as they sound. All Day I Dream About Food’s perfectly celebratory dessert uses coconut, almond and coconut sugar to recreate those Magic Dream Bars of your childhood. Track down – or make your own – sugar-free chocolate chips or carob chips.

Pumpkin Pie Cheesecake

Can’t decide between pumpkin pie and cheesecake? You don’t have to. Ruled.Me’s easy no-bake dessert is free of sugar but high on flavor, with healthy fats packed into a crumbly high-fiber flaxmeal crust.

Pecan Pie

Somehow, Keto Connect managed to make one of the most sugary holiday desserts keto-friendly with an approachable shopping list of ingredients, including sugar-free maple syrup and coconut oil. It’s luxuriously sweet with a light, grain-free crust. We bet that if you don’t tell guests it’s keto-compliant, they won’t know they’re missing the sugar or the grains.
